Two UN Peacekeepers Killed in Shooting Incident Inside UNMISS Base in Malakal

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) announced on Wednesday the killing of two of its military personnel in a shooting incident that occurred inside its base in the city of Malakal, Upper Nile State.UNMISS spokesperson Priyanka Chowdhury confirmed that the incident took place on Tuesday, noting that investigations are currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the event. She stated in a press release

UNMISS confirms that a shooting incident occurred yesterday inside its base in Malakal, resulting in the deaths of two peacekeeping personnel.”

“We express our deepest sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the families and colleagues of the victims. We are currently investigating the incident to uncover the full details.”:Chowdhury added

This incident comes as the UN mission continues to carry out its mandate to protect civilians, support the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, and provide a safe environment for the delivery of humanitarian aid.

It is worth noting that UNMISS was established in 2011 by UN Security Council Resolution 1996 following South Sudan’s independence, and it plays a pivotal role in supporting peace and stability efforts in the country.
