Juba: Al-Wadi
Al-Merreikh Bentiu have been crowned champions of the second edition of the South Sudan Premier League, following the defeat of their closest rivals, Jamus Juba, who lost 2–0 to Holy Family Rumbek in Round 24 of the competition. The gap between the two sides has now widened to eight points with only two rounds remaining.
Al-Merreikh lead the standings with 63 points, while Jamus remain second with 55 points. With this result, Al-Merreikh secure the title even if they lose their remaining two matches, as Jamus can only reach a maximum of 61 points if they win both of their final games.
Al-Merreikh Bentiu’s title triumph comes after an outstanding season, having dominated the league from the early rounds and held the top spot for most of the campaign.
The club will now aim to finish the season in the best possible way by securing a domestic double, as they have qualified for the final of the South Sudan National Cup, where they will face Al-Ghazala Wau on May 9 at Juba National Stadium.
Officially, Al-Merreikh Bentiu will represent the country in next season’s CAF Champions League, while Al-Ghazala Wau will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup regardless of whether they win or finish as runners-up.
Meanwhile, Jamus Juba have secured second place in the league without competition and will represent the country in the CECAFA Kagame Cup for clubs.
