Closure of Lankien Hospital After Bombing Leaves a Quarter of a Million People Without Medical Care in South Sudan

Juba – Al-Wadi Newspaper

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) announced via its Facebook page the permanent closure of Lankien Hospital following an airstrike on 3 February 2026, an incident that has raised serious concerns about the safety of healthcare facilities in conflict-affected areas.

The organization stated that around 250,000 people depended on the hospital for life-saving medical services, making its closure a major blow to the region’s healthcare system.

According to MSF’s statement, a bomb was dropped from an aircraft onto a warehouse inside the hospital compound. While the organization has not been able to conclusively identify the responsible party, available information suggests that government forces are the only actor with the capacity to conduct aerial attacks.

MSF further reported that the hospital was subsequently looted, parts of it were set on fire, and the remaining structures were vandalized.

The organization added that since the beginning of 2025, its facilities and staff have been affected by at least 12 attacks and violent incidents, leading to the closure of four hospitals and leaving hundreds of thousands of people without access to healthcare.

MSF called for an immediate halt to attacks on medical facilities, healthcare workers, and civilians, urging the launch of an independent and impartial investigation into the incident and accountability for those responsible.
