The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs has urged President Salva Kiir to reverse his decision to place First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny under house arrest.
The government authorities in Juba served Dr. Riek Machar with an order of house arrest at his residence. His personal bodyguards were disarmed and relocated to undisclosed locations.
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs expressed concern and stated that the leaders of South Sudan must demonstrate sincerity in their stated commitments to peace. The U.S. Department of State wrote on its X platform, calling on all parties to exercise restraint, and urging President Salva Kiir to reverse the decision to place his deputy under house arrest and to return to implementing the peace agreement signed between them.
