The President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, on Wednesday swore in the newly appointed Governor of Upper Nile State, Lt. Gen. James Koang Chuol, during an official ceremony that underscored the urgent need to promote peace, unity, and stability in the state.
During the swearing-in ceremony, President Kiir called for an end to violence in Upper Nile State, urging local communities to reject conflict and embrace dialogue and reconciliation, stressing that collective efforts are required to restore stability.
He also tasked the new governor with restoring security and fostering peaceful coexistence among the different communities, reaffirming the government’s full support for his mission.
“I call on you to work for peace, stability, and the unity of the people of Upper Nile,” President Kiir said, emphasizing the state’s commitment to backing the new leadership in the state.
Leaders from Upper Nile who attended the ceremony welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence in the governor’s ability to address security challenges. They also called for accountability for those responsible for violence and proposed the convening of an inclusive peace and reconciliation conference.
The development comes amid continued security tensions in the state linked to sporadic clashes involving the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO) and other armed groups, including forces known as the White Army.
