Kiir, UN Mission Chief Discuss Strengthening Cooperation to Support Peace and Stability in South Sudan

President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations during a meeting on Wednesday with the newly appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Anita Kiki Gbeho.

The two sides discussed ways to Strengthen partnership between the government and the United Nations in a manner that supports peace and stability efforts and improves service delivery to citizens.

President Kiir welcomed the new UN official, reiterating his country’s commitment to working jointly with the United Nations to achieve shared objectives, foremost among them consolidating security and stability in the country.

For her part, Ms. Gbeho outlined the mandate of UNMISS, which includes supporting the peace process, protecting civilians, and helping create a conducive environment for lasting stability. She expressed her readiness to work in a spirit of partnership and trust with the government.

President Kiir noted that her appointment builds on existing relations, expressing confidence in her ability to carry out her duties and affirming his government’s full support for her efforts.

The meeting comes as part of ongoing efforts by both sides to enhance joint coordination in pursuit of peace and stability in South Sudan.
