The South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) affirms its commitment to raising awareness about tax compliance. It posted on its Facebook page urging taxpayers to comply with payments and raised the question: Who qualifies as a taxpayer? Understanding one’s tax obligations is key to national development.

So, who is a taxpayer? To answer this question, as part of education and awareness, the answer provided is that a taxpayer is any individual or entity legally required to pay taxes based on income, business activities, or transactions. This includes:

✅ Individuals – salaried workers, self-employed professionals, and entrepreneurs.

✅ Businesses & companies – small, medium, and large enterprises.

✅ Importers & exporters – those involved in international trade.

✅ Property owners – those earning income from rentals or real estate.

✅ Investors & contractors – engaged in government or private sector projects.

Why are taxes paid? Taxes are paid to fund public services, support infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security, ensure business legitimacy, access contracts, financial services, and legal protections, enhance economic growth, and strengthen the national economy.
