Vice President Emphasizes Government’s Focus on Agriculture to Improve Economic Situation

Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, met with the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and Humanitarian Coordinator, Anita Kiki Gbeho. The two sides discussed the economic challenges facing the country, with a direct focus on strengthening cooperation between the government and the United Nations.

As Chair of the Economic Cluster, Vice President Dr. Bol Mel presented the government’s strategy to drive economic transformation through timely salary payments for civil servants, implementing economic reforms, and boosting investment.

The Vice President reiterated President Salva Kiir’s strong commitment to prioritizing agriculture, recognizing its potential to enhance economic independence and improve the welfare of the South Sudanese people.

Ms. Anita briefed the Vice President on the ongoing UN initiatives in governance support, climate change adaptation, strengthening essential social services, and enhancing food security in South Sudan.

Both leaders agreed on the necessity for closer collaboration now more than ever.

Dr. Bol stated that the government values the role of the United Nations and all development partners as vital allies in the country’s journey toward peace, stability, and sustainable growth.
