The First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, received a letter from His Holiness Pope Francis, the Pope of the Catholic Church in the Vatican. The letter was delivered by Archbishop Seamus P. Horgan, the Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan.
According to the press office of the First Vice President, the letter addressed various topics, especially those related to the Revitalized Peace Agreement, the situations in Upper Nile and the Lakes regions, and the overall security situation in South Sudan.
The First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, briefed Pope Francis’ representative on the progress made in the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement and the challenges facing the parties in fully implementing it.
Dr. Machar said that he would always remember the profound humility of His Holiness Pope Francis and his love for the people of South Sudan during their meeting in Rome, Italy. The First Vice President added, “One will never forget the pledges we made before His Holiness Pope Francis to maintain peace, unity, and reconciliation among our people.”
Dr. Machar reiterated his commitment to the Revitalized Peace Agreement and pointed out that the people of South Sudan will overcome the difficulties and incidents that have occurred in order to maintain peace, stability, and the best interests of the country.
The letter from Pope Francis called for a spirit of peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness among the citizens, urging political leaders to embrace the spirit of forgiveness towards one another and work towards developing the young nation.
Pope Francis also urged the people and leaders of South Sudan to close the chapter on conflict and open new paths for peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
After the meeting, Archbishop Seamus P. Horgan told the media that he had conveyed Pope Francis’ message to Dr. Riek Machar and emphasized that dialogue and forgiveness are the only means to achieve sustainable peace in South Sudan.
