Juba: Al-Wadi
Al-Merrikh Bentiu won the South Sudan National Cup title for the first time in the club’s history after defeating Ghazala Wau 2-1 in the final match held the day before yesterday at Juba National Stadium.
Al-Merrikh took the lead through their Rwandan defender Ishimwi Saleh, who scored with a header, as the first half ended 1-0.
In the second half, player Gaitan Masha added the second goal for Al-Merrikh following a perfect cross from captain Shikidi. Before the final whistle, Ayoub Kuak reduced the deficit for Ghazala.
With this triumph, Al-Merrikh secured a historic domestic double this season, winning both the league and the cup — a remarkable achievement for the club from Bentiu. The team had lost the cup final last season to Jamus Juba and finished third in the league standings.
Al-Merrikh will now represent South Sudan in the CAF Champions League, while Ghazala Wau will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup. Jamus Juba, meanwhile, will compete in the CECAFA Club Championship, also known as the Kagame Cup.
