The Governor of Lakes State Rin Tueny Mabor, concluded the Agaar Community Conference today, Friday, January 9, 2026, in what observers have described as a “historic achievement” reflecting unity and reconciliation in the state.
In his speech before a large gathering of elders, youth, and women, the Governor described the event as a “historic day” that demonstrates to the world that peace has finally taken root in Lakes State. He emphasized the importance of the conference in restoring the reputation of the Agaar community and noted the praise given by the chiefs of the Malual Gier Nyanng community for the state’s enforcement of law and order.
The Governor said, “The success of this meeting demonstrates unity and reconciliation. Agaar was once considered estranged from the Dinka, but thanks to our joint efforts in promoting peace, we are united once again.”
He called on the community to move beyond old grudges, stressing that the strength of the state lies in its social wellbeing and the implementation of the conference’s new resolutions.
Turning to public health, the Governor addressed the state’s high HIV/AIDS prevalence, issuing an urgent humanitarian appeal for those affected to seek treatment at local clinics and for those unaware of their health status to undergo testing. He noted that modern medicine has made the disease no longer “fatal,” urging everyone not to lose hope.
A key highlight of the speech was the Governor’s recognition of the Lakes diaspora, affectionately labeled as “County No. 9.” He warned against their exploitation and encouraged efforts to motivate them to return home to help increase the state’s population and workforce.
The Governor affirmed that the conference represents a significant step toward building a new Lakes State through unity, reconciliation, and broad community participation.
