The United States Ambassador to South Sudan, His Excellency Ambassador Michael J. Adler, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Bak Barnaba Chol Bak, at his office in the capital, Juba.
The Ministry’s Information Management Unit reported on its official Facebook page that the meeting discussed ways to strengthen economic and development cooperation between South Sudan and the United States, contributing to the support of development projects and the advancement of bilateral relations.

Michael J. Adler is the fourth U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan. He arrived in Juba on August 23, 2022, and presented his credentials on August 24 of the same year. Adler has a long-standing career in the diplomatic service, having joined the U.S. Department of State in 1992.
From 2019 to 2021, he served as Deputy Senior Director for South Asia and Director for Afghanistan on the White House National Security Council, before serving as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs and Director of the Office of Afghanistan Affairs.
Adler has also held several positions at the U.S. Department of State, including Director of the Office of Near Eastern Affairs in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research and Director of the Office of Regional Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, as well as assignments in Washington as Desk Officer for Spain in the Bureau of European Affairs and Watch Officer in the Operations Center.

His overseas assignments have included Deputy Chief of Mission in Kuwait and Lebanon, Political Counselor in Afghanistan, Deputy Political Counselor in Iraq, as well as postings in Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, and Qatar. He also served with the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad and Najaf and at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.
Before joining the Foreign Service, Adler lived in Nigeria and worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), including in South Africa. He has received multiple State Department performance awards, the Secretary of Defense’s Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and the Spanish Order of Civil Merit.
