A dramatic mid-morning confrontation unfolded on Tuesday, December 9, along Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District after plainclothes detectives shot and killed two suspected armed robbers.

The incident occurred shortly before noon near the Moi Avenue–Kenyatta Avenue junction, where officers acting on intelligence reports confronted a group of five suspected criminals believed to be linked to an earlier robbery. According to witnesses, the gang had allegedly assaulted a client moments after he exited a nearby building, prompting a swift response from officers on patrol.
Two of the suspects were fatally shot during the exchange, while the remaining three managed to escape. The shooting sparked panic among pedestrians, many of whom watched as the officers pursued and apprehended the suspects.
Crowds quickly gathered at the scene, forcing the officers to fire teargas canisters to disperse onlookers and secure the area. Police later loaded the bodies of the two suspects into a van before leaving the scene.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects as part of an ongoing crackdown on rising crime within the Nairobi CBD, particularly incidents involving robberies, phone snatching and the harassment of shop owners.
The latest operation comes amid intensified security patrols during the festive season. In September, Nairobi police arrested more than 200 individuals believed to be involved in widespread mugging activities across the city.
Speaking after that operation, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah assured the public that the city remains secure and urged residents to continue reporting criminal activities.
