Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has claimed he was assaulted by security personnel while on the campaign trail ahead of the January 2026 general elections.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate said the incident occurred during a campaign stop in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, on the outskirts of Kampala. Speaking after the event, Kyagulanyi alleged that security officers physically attacked him and members of his team, disrupting his outreach activities.
Photographs from the rally, captured by Reuters photographer Abubaker Lubowa, show the NUP leader addressing supporters as his campaign intensifies just weeks before Ugandans head to the polls.Authorities have yet to issue a response to the allegations.
Bobi Wine has frequently accused security agencies of using excessive force against opposition politicians, claims the government has repeatedly denied.
The incident comes as Uganda enters a highly charged election period, with concerns from civil society groups over rising tensions and the safety of political actors.
