Migrants at the Border with Mexico Feel Fear and Frustration After Trump’s Election Win

More than 850 migrants in a shelter at the southern border between the United States and Mexico are feeling frustrated after the victory of President-elect Donald Trump. They fear that Trump will not allow them to enter the United States.

The migrants have been waiting at the “Senda de Vida” shelter for months for their scheduled entry appointments, after submitting their applications via the CBP One app, which was created in 2020. If their scheduled time does not come before Trump’s inauguration, they may attempt to cross the border illegally, risking deportation or encounters with criminal gangs.

Following the announcement of Trump’s victory, sadness fell over the tents and small wooden buildings, and hope turned to fear among the migrants.

Raquel Segura, 39, from Nuevo León, Mexico, told the site that he and his two daughters are among those hoping to cross the border. According to a report published in American media, Segura said he and his daughters, along with the other migrants at the shelter, were hoping to cross into the United States.

Hundreds of migrants at the Mexican border are feeling frustrated after Kamala Harris’s defeat in the 2024 general presidential election and Donald Trump’s victory. Pastor Hector Silva, who manages the shelter, told the *Telegram* newspaper: “If Harris had won, people would be jumping for joy, but as you can see now, they seem sad and frustrated.”

One of Trump’s major campaign promises was to close the borders and launch the largest deportation of illegal immigrants in U.S. history. He has already appointed former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Thomas Homan, to be in charge of the border. Homan, a former New York police officer and Border Patrol agent, is known for his hardline stance on immigration.

Homan said on the “Fox & Friends” program that he supports Trump’s plan for mass deportation and will prioritize public safety and national security threats. The Republican National Convention warned millions of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. to start packing their belongings and cautioned Democrats not to stand in the way if they plan to obstruct the upcoming administration’s mass deportation plans.

Reports from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website indicate that illegal border crossings have increased under the Biden administration, with nearly 3 million illegal crossings in 2024. In 2021, there were over 10.8 million illegal border crossings..

A migrant named Berta Lisa Matut said that she, her husband, and their eldest daughter (5 years old) were forced to leave Honduras nine months ago after her brother was killed, and their lives were threatened. She recently gave birth to another child in the camp after becoming pregnant during their journey through Central America.

She said: “I hope that God will guide Trump so that he does not get rid of the app, or maybe there will be another way we can cross because everything we’ve been through has been very difficult.”

“The situation in Honduras is not safe, I don’t want to go back, but if there are no legal paths to enter the country, we might attempt to cross illegally.”

Francisco Gomez, 40, told *The Telegraph* that he and his family left Honduras 10 months ago after a family member was killed. They joined a caravan at the Guatemalan border and arrived in Reynosa after two weeks.

He said he’s not worried about Trump’s election win because he trusts “that God will be a good leader, just as He was the first time.” Silva hopes that Trump will have compassion for the migrants who long for a better life in America, where they hope to work hard and raise their families in a safe environment
