Peace Conference Between Abyei and Twic Youth in Wau Next April

Report: Al-Naeim Mubarak Kuol

The Abyei Youth Union is preparing to hold a joint meeting with youth from the Twic area of the neighboring Warrap State in April next year.

The spokesperson for the Abyei Youth Union, Yay Arou Aik, told Abiye FM Radio last Wednesday that the conference aims to achieve a ceasefire, ensure the freedom of movement for people and goods, and support peace and stability in both regions.

Aik added that the meeting will involve 30 youth participants, including 10 young women from both regions, as well as heads of relevant departments for communication, information, peace, and reconciliation, along with representatives from traditional leaders.

Aik emphasized that peace between the two communities is crucial, as it will allow people to return to farming this season and send children to school without fear. He called on the youth to embrace the option of peace, as they are often the victims in conflicts.

The Abyei Youth Union proposed organizing a peace conference with their counterparts in Warrap, to be held under the auspices of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in July 2024.

The peace conference will be held in Wau City, Western Bahr el-Ghazal State, and will be organized by the Community Liaison Office (CLO) of UNISFA and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) office in Warrap.
