Women’s Basketball National Team Loses to Egypt in the Qualifiers

Our national women’s basketball team lost its third match of the third round in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone 5 Qualifiers against Egypt, with a score of 85-64.

Egypt is hosting the Zone 5 qualifiers, which include the participating teams: Egypt (host), South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, and Burundi.

All qualification matches are being held at Hassan Mostafa Hall in the city of 6th of October, west of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, until February 7. The winner of the qualifiers will secure direct qualification to the next AfroBasket Women’s Championship, scheduled to take place from July 25 to August 3, 2025, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

So far, the national teams of Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Senegal, Rwanda, Mali, and Cameroon have already secured their spots in next summer’s finals.

Additionally, the top four teams from the AfroBasket Championship will qualify for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Germany.

Our national women’s team previously secured a victory in their opening match against Kenya with a score of 86-69 but lost the second game against Uganda 69-83.

Today, the Bright Stars women’s basketball team will play its final match against Burundi in the qualifiers’ closing round, aiming for a second victory and an improved ranking in the Zone 5 qualifiers.
