The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization Donates Cholera Vaccine to South Sudan

Report: Al-Naeim Mubarak Kuol
The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) has donated 1.1 million doses of cholera vaccine to South Sudan, according to Dr. Harriet Pasquale Akello, Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Health. She explained that priority for the cholera vaccine doses will be given to Unity State, particularly the Rubkona area, as well as regions in Juba and Western Aweil that have been severely affected by the ongoing cholera outbreak.
As of December 23, 9,690 cholera cases and 147 fatalities have been reported in South Sudan. Dr. Harriet noted that the Christmas holiday has made data collection more challenging, with the latest statistics on December 25 indicating 449 new cases and 15 deaths. Despite the widespread nature of the outbreak, she highlighted encouraging signs in efforts to combat the spread of cholera in the affected areas.
