President Salva Kiir has dismissed the Commissioner-General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority, Africano Mande Gedima, through a presidential decree broadcast on the government TV channel SSBC on Wednesday evening.
President Kiir appointed Simon Akuei, the Secretary-General of the South Sudan Chamber of Commerce, as the new Commissioner-General in his place.
Commissioner Mande had attended a meeting of the Revenue Authority Commissioners of the East African Community (EAC) member states in Nairobi, Kenya, where he highlighted the challenges the country faces in the digital age, describing it as a nightmare that hinders the institution’s efforts to keep up with the region.
Mande urged EAC member states to support South Sudan in its efforts to catch up with technological advancements and called for the adoption of interconnected, interoperable digital systems to facilitate regional integration, particularly in cross-border trade and customs services.
According to Mande, South Sudan will take time to adopt some protocols, and the country faces challenges in keeping up with the member states in electronic revenue services, calling for collaboration to overcome these challenges.
