The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has welcomed renewed commitments by the country’s political leaders to strengthen dialogue and work towards national unity but warned that genuine progress will only be possible if all parties take immediate action to stop ongoing violence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Mission said it remains “deeply concerned” about continued hostilities across the country, including aerial bombardments, armed clashes, and intercommunal violence. These incidents, it noted, continue to claim lives, displace thousands, and destroy property, including vital humanitarian facilities.
Graham Maitland, the Officer in Charge of UNMISS, said the expressions of unity and dialogue from South Sudan’s leaders are encouraging but must be matched with decisive steps to protect civilians and uphold the ceasefire.
“These are important steps at this critical moment, but such commitments will only translate into tangible progress if collective action is taken to ensure violence does not undermine these efforts,” Maitland said.
He added that UNMISS stands with the people and government of South Sudan but emphasized that safeguarding civilians and advancing the peace process should remain top priorities.“Now is the time to match words with meaningful action. By engaging in genuine, sustained dialogue and fully respecting the ceasefire, South Sudan’s leaders can steer the country towards stability. The South Sudanese people deserve not only promises, but lasting peace,” he said.
The Mission urged all stakeholders to intensify political engagement, de-escalate tensions, and take concrete measures to end violence as the country works toward sustainable peace and credible elections.
