Last week, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams in South Sudan carried out a series of mental health awareness activities in their project areas in Leer, Bentiu, and Mayen Abun (part of the Twic Project). The initiative comes as part of MSF’s ongoing efforts to promote community awareness of mental health and provide psychological support to local populations.
In Leer, the teams organized awareness sessions targeting school students, teachers, hospital staff, patients, and members of the local community. These sessions focused on raising awareness about the impact of stress on both physical and mental health, offering effective coping strategies, encouraging open discussions around mental health issues, and strengthening emotional resilience through social connections. The sessions also highlighted the available mental health resources and the importance of seeking professional support when needed.

Similar activities were conducted at Bentiu State Hospital, where MSF teams engaged healthcare workers, patients, and caregivers in discussions on stress management and the importance of reaching out for help when necessary.
In Mayen Abun (Twic Project), MSF also held awareness sessions and community discussions aimed at improving public understanding of mental health and emphasizing the importance of psychological well-being as an integral part of overall health.
These activities are part of MSF’s broader mission to expand access to mental health support in communities facing complex health and humanitarian challenges. The organization continues to work towards breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging individuals to seek support without hesitation.
