The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has rejected what it described as a “sudden political defection” following the resignation of senior party figure Nhial Deng Nhial and his formation of a new political group, the South Sudan Salvation Movement (SSSM).
In a press conference, the SPLM accused Nhial of political betrayal, saying his criticism of the government over corruption, insecurity, and election delays was “unfounded and driven by personal motives.”
Bol Makueng Yol, SPLM’s Secretary for Political Affairs, stated that Nhial had automatically lost his party membership and his seat in the reconstituted parliament, adding that the SPLM is not afraid of the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2026.
The party also denied any involvement in the alleged arrests of Nhial’s supporters, accusing him instead of aligning with opposition groups “seeking to gain power through violence.”
