The Government of Unity State, under the leadership of Governor Riek Bim Top, officially inaugurated the Mobile Court in Bentiu, in a landmark move aimed at strengthening the rule of law and improving access to justice after more than eleven years of the state’s High Court being non-functional.
The opening ceremony witnessed a massive turnout, with thousands of citizens from across the state gathering to welcome the initiative — a clear reflection of the public’s eagerness to see the formal justice system restored and legal institutions reactivated to protect citizens’ rights and ensure fair trials.
Speaking at the event, the state’s Paramount Chief, Sultan Gatluak Chie, expressed his great satisfaction with the initiative, saying:
“We were often forced to handle cases beyond our traditional jurisdiction due to the absence of formal courts. Today, my fellow chiefs and I are delighted to witness the return of justice to our state through this mobile court.”
For his part, Maj. Gen. Gathon Giewal, Unity State Police Commissioner, affirmed the police’s full commitment to working closely with the judiciary and international partners to ensure justice is served. He added that the launch of the mobile court marks a turning point in the state’s efforts to enhance security and stability.
The project received strong support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and several international partners, who pledged to continue assisting the state government, commending Governor Riek Bim Top’s “effective leadership” in addressing both judicial and security challenges facing the region.
The Mobile Court is expected to play a vital role in handling serious criminal cases, prosecuting offenders, and restoring public confidence in the justice system — thereby reinforcing the rule of law throughout Unity State.
