Lakes State marked the International Day of Peace yesterday with a large and diverse celebration attended by youth representatives, civil society members, local authorities, and international partners, including the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The event featured powerful speeches emphasizing the importance of promoting a culture of peace, dialogue, and coexistence among communities, while firmly rejecting all forms of violence.
Laat Majak, Chairperson of the Rumbek Centre Youth Association, stated:
“Our actions today shape our future. Let us be champions of peace and non-violence.”
For his part, William Koji Kerjok, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports and Acting Minister of Information and Communication, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peacebuilding efforts within local communities.
“We will not tolerate acts of violence or revenge attacks. In collaboration with UNMISS and other partners, we will bring conflicting communities to the table to resolve their differences peacefully,” he said.
This celebration comes at a time when both local authorities and international organizations are working to strengthen community reconciliation in Lakes State, which has experienced intercommunal conflicts and tribal unrest in recent years.
