President Kiir Affirms Government Support for Lakes State, Stresses Importance of Peace and Development

Juba – Al-Wadi Newspaper

President of the Republic, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, has reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to supporting Lakes State in its efforts to achieve peace and sustainable development. This came during a meeting held on Thursday with the state’s Governor, Rin Tueny Mabor, who presented a comprehensive report outlining the current challenges facing the state.

In his report, Governor Rin stated that recent flooding had caused extensive destruction in several counties, including Awerial, Rumbek East, Cueibet, and Wulu. The floods submerged farmlands, displaced a large number of residents, and affected thousands of livestock—an essential source of income for many households in the state.

Despite the environmental challenges, Governor Rin assured the President that the overall security situation in the state remains stable, with only a few isolated incidents caused by external cattle raids—a long-standing issue in the region.

In a related development, the Governor called for the resumption of construction on the Juba–Bahr el Ghazal highway project, describing it as a vital economic artery. He emphasized that its completion would revitalize trade, ease movement for citizens, and improve access to essential services for communities along the route.

For his part, President Kiir stressed the government’s strong focus on infrastructure projects, particularly roads, due to their crucial role in promoting development and stability. He affirmed that the government will take the necessary steps to ensure the timely completion of the road project, as part of its broader commitment to advancing development across all states of South Sudan.
