New Floods Displace Over 40,000 in Jonglei and Pibor as MPs Call for Urgent Intervention

Juba – Al-Wadi Newspaper

Members of Parliament representing Twic East and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area have warned of an impending humanitarian disaster after new floods displaced over 40,000 people across Jonglei State and large parts of Pibor.

During a parliamentary session held on Monday, MP Deng Dau Deng, who represents Twic East, revealed that flooding in Pochalla County has reached unprecedented levels. He noted that the Akobo River had burst its banks for the first time in decades, submerging the entire town and surrounding villages.

“I received a call from the Commissioner of Pochalla who confirmed that the Akobo River had overflowed in an unprecedented manner, flooding the area from South Pochalla to Boma,” Deng said, describing the situation as “a natural disaster that requires urgent action.”

Deng urged Parliament to allow him and a group of fellow MPs to leave the session and go directly to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to coordinate with responsible authorities, without waiting for an official ministerial briefing.

Meanwhile, MP David Okwier Akway, representing the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, confirmed that his constituency is also experiencing renewed flooding due to a collapsed bridge and continued heavy rainfall, further worsening the humanitarian situation.

The MPs called for an immediate response from both the government and humanitarian agencies to prevent the crisis from escalating and to deliver relief to the affected communities.

Several regions in South Sudan have experienced new waves of flooding over the past week, displacing thousands of people and prompting warnings of a broader humanitarian crisis if urgent intervention is not undertaken.
