Local authorities in Tonj East County, Warrap State, reported on Monday that four people were killed and 16 others injured over the weekend following a violent attack carried out by armed youth from the Thiek section against members of the Akok section in the Ngap-Agok Payam area. The clashes, which lasted throughout the day, have raised concerns of renewed violence.
According to Radio Tamazuj, Police Sergeant Deng Madut confirmed that fighting had ceased by Sunday, but expressed concern over the possibility of retaliatory attacks. He also noted that the wounded are currently receiving treatment at various local healthcare facilities.
Madut elaborated:
“The attacks were launched by armed youth from the Thiek section of Malual-Choum against armed youth from Akok in Ngap-Agok Payam. The clashes resulted in two deaths and nine injuries on the attackers’ side, while two were killed and seven injured from Ngap-Agok, bringing the total casualties to four dead and 16 injured.”
Moses Madut, Member of Parliament representing Constituency 16 of Eastern Tonj County, confirmed the incident and announced the launch of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the violence. He also noted that the conflict erupted while the local commissioner was in Kuajok town, highlighting the difficulty in reaching local officials to obtain further details on the causes of the fighting.
The recent escalation underscores the fragility of peace in parts of Warrap State, as local leaders urge for urgent mediation and preventive measures to avert further bloodshed.
