The Algerian capital, Algiers, witnessed the launch of the Chef de Mission (CDM) meetings on Monday, 19 May 2025, in preparation for the first edition of the African School Games, scheduled to take place in Algeria this coming July. The meetings will continue through 20 May, with broad participation from representatives of African nations.

Among the official delegations was South Sudan’s delegation, led by Mr. Paul Puk Kon, Acting Secretary-General of the South Sudan National Olympic Committee (SSNOC), and Mr. Francis Idris, Deputy Executive Director, who joined other African officials in shaping this historic continental sports event.

The inaugural edition of the African School Games will feature competitions in 25 sporting disciplines, including several key Olympic sports such as athletics, swimming, judo, taekwondo, beach volleyball, 3×3 basketball, football, and skateboarding.

In a move to ensure regional representation in football, each of the seven zones under the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ACNOA) will be permitted to qualify two national teams (male and female), fostering competitive spirit and inclusivity across the continent.

During his opening address, Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, President of the Confederation of African Olympic Sports (CASOL), stressed the importance of finalizing the technical regulations for each sport within the scheduled timeframe. He emphasized that adherence to these regulations is fundamental to ensuring the smooth and successful organization of the competitions.

These games are poised to serve as a crucial platform for discovering emerging athletic talent across Africa and as a space to promote Olympic values among youth, aligning with the continent’s aspirations for a vibrant and promising sporting future.
