According to Spanish newspaper Marca on Monday, Real Madrid is keen to appoint Xabi Alonso as its new manager before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup on June 15.
The paper, known for its close ties to Real Madrid, reported that Ancelotti is likely to leave once the club’s chances of winning La Liga are officially over – a decision that could come as early as Wednesday if Madrid loses to Mallorca.
Alonso has already announced his departure from Bayer Leverkusen at the end of this season, and he is expected to take over at Santiago Bernabéu sooner than usual.
Although player contracts in Europe typically begin on July 1, there is nothing preventing Real Madrid from signing Alonso earlier. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stated on social media that Alonso’s contract would run from June 1, 2025, until June 30, 2028.
The German league ends next week, followed by the conclusion of La Liga a week later.
When asked about his future after a 4–3 loss to Barcelona, Ancelotti—who is set to take over the Brazil job on June 1—was reserved in his response.
He simply said to a reporter: “It’s the last Clásico of the season. We still have three games left, and we’ll try to win them all.”
Real Madrid’s chances of winning La Liga are now almost impossible, with Barcelona—coached by Hansi Flick—needing only two points from their final three matches to secure the title.
