In a significant step toward environmental sustainability and combating climate change, Unity State, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has launched an ambitious environmental project aimed at planting one million trees across all seven counties of the state.
The launch ceremony was presided over by Unity State Governor, Hon. Riek Bim Top Long, who also announced the renaming of the main road leading to Tuomangor area, passing by the diocesan cathedral, to “Pope Francis Road” in honor of the recently deceased Pope Francis. The renaming recognizes his influential global stance on environmental protection and social justice.

“The state government, in collaboration with our partners, has decided to launch the One Million Tree Planting Project in Bentiu and the surrounding counties. We dedicate this environmental initiative to the memory of Pope Francis in appreciation of his unwavering support for environmental causes, human dignity, and for his role in supporting the Diocese of Bentiu and appointing its first bishop.”, During the ceremony, the governor stated
The governor noted that Unity State has faced repeated environmental disasters in recent years, leading to the loss of large areas of natural forest, which negatively impacted local livelihoods. He described the project as a strategic step toward restoring vegetation cover and achieving comprehensive environmental recovery to restore ecological balance.
He further emphasized that naming the road “Pope Francis Road” is a tribute of loyalty and gratitude to a global religious figure who stood with the people’s struggles and supported peace and stability, particularly in South Sudan.
The One Million Tree Project is expected to improve environmental quality, reduce the impacts of climate change, and enhance the natural beauty of Unity State. It will also raise environmental awareness among the population through collaborative efforts involving the government, civil society, and international partners.
