
During a session of the United Nations Security Council, South Sudan’s representative congratulated the Council President and expressed gratitude to UN officials and humanitarian actors. The government also condemned the deadly attack on a UN helicopter in Nasir and affirmed its full cooperation in the investigation, while reiterating its commitment to ensuring the safety of UN personnel.
South Sudan reaffirmed its full commitment to the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, despite ongoing political tensions, including concerns over the arrest of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar. The government noted that President Salva Kiir had reassured citizens that the peace process would stay on track.
The government is working to curb intercommunal violence by strengthening the police force and deploying mobile courts. It also highlighted recent progress, including the enactment of the Truth, Reconciliation and Healing Act and the Compensation and Reparation Act (2024).
Amid a worsening humanitarian crisis affecting more than 6.1 million people due to food insecurity, disease outbreaks, and regional conflicts, the government called for continued humanitarian support and praised its citizens for hosting over 1.1 million refugees from Sudan.
Finally, South Sudan urged the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to align its efforts with national priorities, stressing the importance of holding inclusive and credible elections at the end of the transitional period. The government reiterated its commitment to peace, unity, and reform, emphasizing that the people of South Sudan have chosen peace.
