The Libyan Football Federation officially announced on Tuesday the appointment of Senegalese coach Aliou Cissé as the new head coach of the Libyan national team for a two-year term, replacing Nasser Al-Hadhiri.
The federation stated on its Facebook account: “We welcome the best coach in Africa, Aliou Cissé, as the new head coach of the Libyan national team until 2027.”
It was also revealed that Cissé will be officially presented to the media on March 13 in Tripoli before beginning his journey with the Mediterranean Knights.
His appointment comes ahead of Libya’s crucial matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they will face Angola and Cameroon on March 20 and 25, respectively.

Libya currently sits second in Group D with seven points, just one point behind leaders Cameroon.
With Cissé at the helm, Libya aims to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup and earn a spot in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted jointly by Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Libya has not qualified for the tournament since 2012.
Cissé’s notable achievements as a coach include leading Senegal to victory in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and reaching the final in 2019, where they lost to Algeria. He also guided the Teranga Lions to two consecutive World Cup appearances, in 2018 and 2022.
