Report: Al-Naeim Mubarak Kuol
The First Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, discussed with the Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in the Abyei Administrative Area, General Robert Yao Ibrahim, the review of security and the humanitarian situation in the disputed region between South Sudan and Sudan.
On Wednesday, General Ibrahim stated that he discussed with Dr. Machar the way forward and how to ensure the continued maintenance of peace in the area. He mentioned that they discussed ways to continue ensuring security and peace in the region and how they can support the local community to enable them to support humanitarian organizations, especially during the dry season when the area witnesses movement of livestock.
He added that there is movement of cattle herders from the Sudanese Misseriya tribe from the northern side, and there is also internal movement due to the impact of floods on various areas. This will lead to the presence of new people within the region.
Abyei is a resource-rich area, including oil, and has been a point of contention between South Sudan and Sudan since 2005, following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement which led to the independence of South Sudan. However, the status of the area has not been settled regarding which country it belongs to. In 2013, the Ngok Dinka communities conducted a unilateral referendum, calling on the Government of South Sudan to recognize the results of the referendum and adopt it in favor of South Sudan.
