Juba City Council banned the movement of livestock within the town

By Emmanuel Michael Garjiek The Juba City Council issued directives announced on the state media broadcasting on Wednesday banning rearing and movement of livestock within the city jurisdiction, the directives showing alarm over public order and urban movement; meanwhile, the order mandates that all local authorities comply with the regulation.

Juba City Council Johnson Sawka issued the executive that reads “No person is permitted to keep cattle, sheep, or goats in residential areas within Juba City Council’s territory,” the order stated.

“The Chief Executive Officer of Juba City Council, block directors, and the general public are required to ensure the implementation of this order, which takes immediate effect.”Livestock’s movement is common in Juba and its suburbs; this practice is done by pastoralists searching for pastures and water for their animals. However, the council believes that restricting livestock in residential areas will enhance public health and safety, reducing potential conflicts between residents and animals.later.

However, this practice has frequently led to tensions with local communities and disrupted traffic, underscoring the need for stricter urban policies.

Additionally, unregulated cattle migration in Central Equatoria State, where Juba is located, has led to conflicts between farmers and herders.

These tensions have caused violence, displacement, and humanitarian challenges. Efforts are being made to relocate cattle herders to their areas of origin to reduce these issues.
