Passing of Ali Gagarin, Captain of Sudan’s National Team in the 1970s

Dr. Haidar Hassan Haj Al-Siddiq, famously known as Ali Gagarin, the historic captain and top scorer of Sudan’s national football team, passed away this morning in a hospital in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, after a long battle with illness. He was 80 years old.

The late Ali Gagarin had a distinguished career in diplomacy, serving as Sudan’s ambassador in several African countries. He was part of the golden generation that achieved a historic victory by winning the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Khartoum, securing the title for the Sudan Falcons.

He gained widespread fame as a player for Al-Hilal SC (Sudan), Al-Nassr FC (Saudi Arabia), and Stade d’Abidjan (Ivory Coast). During the 1970s, he was nicknamed “The Flaming Spear” for his decisive goals in all matches.

Additionally, Dr. Ali Gagarin held several leadership positions within the board of Al-Hilal SC Sudan at different times.
