The Government of the Abyei Special Administrative Area has officially announced that Kadhian Airport in Alal County is ready to receive flights.
According to Mr. Deng Kiir Mater, the acting spokesperson and Head of the Department of Physical Infrastructure and Public Utilities, the airport is ready, although some sections of the runway still need to be leveled and the arrival terminal completed.
He explained that large cargo planes can land at the airport, which has a runway length of two kilometers. He added that, in order to open the airport, the Abyei administration is working with UNISFA and the transitional national government in Juba to make the necessary preparations.
According to Mr. Deng Ajak, the Managing Director of Aerojet Flight Company, the opening of Kadhian Airport will greatly benefit the population in terms of travel and the provision of goods and consumables for the area’s residents from Juba.
It is worth mentioning that the 8th Governors’ Forum recommended the opening of Kadhian Airport in Abyei to alleviate the suffering of citizens who are stranded and isolated during the rainy season. The opening of this vital facility will significantly contribute to connecting the Abyei area with other parts of South Sudan.
