The Abyei Special Administrative Area is preparing to welcome more than fifty families returning to their homeland from the war-torn Al Jazeera State in Sudan, which has been experiencing a conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since 2023.
The Governor of Alal County, Kat Chol Koryom, revealed to “Abyei FM” that the return convoy started from the town of Al Rufa’a in Al Jazeera State and took several days due to insecurity in the area.
The Governor said, “A youth group called Magany in the Anyiel Chiefdom in Alal County initiated this effort due to the deteriorating security situation in Sudan,” emphasizing that more families will be transported to Abyei when funds are available.
The Governor announced that all preparations have been made to receive the convoy transporting stranded families from Sudan in the village of Awolnhom upon their arrival. This is the first initiative of its kind by the county’s youth, who have taken responsibility for transporting the stranded families from Sudan.
