First Vice President Discusses Security and Humanitarian Challenges in Abyei with UNISFA Head

The First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, met with Maj. Gen. Robert Yaw Affram, the Acting Head of Mission and Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss critical issues affecting Abyei, including its final status.
During the discussions, Dr. Machar briefed Maj. Gen. Affram on the recent resolution of the Governors’ Forum concerning Abyei’s final status. The resolution stipulates that the executive and legislative bodies of Abyei should deliberate on the results of the October 2013 Abyei Status Referendum and then present their findings to the national government for approval.
The meeting also addressed other key topics, including the operationalization of Malual Aleu Airport for humanitarian purposes, the situation of Sudanese refugees in Abyei, and the proposal to deploy police forces to enhance community security in the region.
