The military in Niger announced on Wednesday that ten soldiers were killed and seven others were injured in a terrorist attack near the border with Burkina Faso.
The military reported that the incident occurred on Tuesday in the area of Petel Kole, where hundreds of militants on motorbikes attacked a military post. The army stated that 26 attackers were “neutralized.”
Reports of another attack in Chatoumane spread on social media, but the Niger government denounced these reports, calling them “baseless.” Military authorities accused their rivals of spreading misleading information to undermine the army’s morale.
Since the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup in July 2023, Niger has seen an increase in violence by terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS. This year’s attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 1,500 civilians and military personnel. According to ACLE, this marks a significant increase compared to the 650 deaths recorded in the previous year.
