UNHCR is worried about the growing surge of refugees into South Sudan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed concern over the current rise of persons coming in South Sudan in need of protection and assistance.

In a news statement issued on Tuesday from Geneva, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado stated that tens of thousands of refugees were fleeing renewed violence in Sudan and South Sudan’s border districts.

“More than 20,000 Sudanese from border villages crossed into South Sudan last week – tripling the number of daily arrivals compared to previous weeks,” the statement says on occasion. “Since Saturday, there have been an additional estimated 7,000 to 10,000 new arrivals each day, including more South Sudanese refugees leaving the camps in White Nile State where they have been residing in Sudan.”
According to the press statement, the bulk of those displaced are women and children, highlighting the conflict’s impact on vulnerable people.

It also stated that, in addition to the major border crossing at Joda, many migrants were entering at informal crossing sites that were exceedingly difficult for UNHCR and its partners to reach.

All of the newcomers need life-saving humanitarian assistance, with water and health care being the most urgent needs, particularly considering the continuing cholera outbreak. Renk’s transit facilities are already congested, hosting roughly 17,000 people, up 4,000 from two weeks ago.

A UNHCR delegation that visited the border on Monday allegedly saw thousands of refugees trekking along the 40-kilometer route between the border and the town of Renk. in a continuous line.

According to the crew, families had stopped along the route, with some obtaining food and drink from neighboring towns. UNHCR and its partners were increasing efforts to assist new arrivals and enhance basic services, but acute underfunding remained an issue.

“Inside Sudan, hostilities around refugee camps and areas hosting displaced Sudanese pose grave and worrying risks to civilians, including refugees and displaced people,” according to the organization. “The continuation of violence threatens the ability of UNHCR and partners to deliver life-saving protection and assistance to refugees and displaced Sudanese.”

The UN Refugee Agency has appealed for respecting international humanitarian law and the civilian nature of refugee camps, which must remain safe havens for individuals escaping violence.

humanitarian assets and supplies are preserved.

White Nile State is home to nearly 400,000 South Sudanese refugees in 10 refugee camps, as well as more than 650,000 displaced Sudanese who have left turmoil in other regions of the nation. Since the commencement of the Sudanese conflict in April 2023, this southern state has served as a safe haven for refugees fleeing violence elsewhere in the country.

More than 12 million people have been displaced, with more than 3 million seeking asylum in neighboring countries, making it one of the world’s greatest and most serious displacement crises.
UNHCR has reiterated its commitment to continue on the ground in Sudan and adjacent countries, working with partners to help millions of people impacted by the crisis.

The organization has asked for an immediate pause of hostilities in order to preserve civilian lives and ensure the continuation of humanitarian aid.

So yet, financial resources to assist migrants fleeing Sudan remain inadequate, with only 30% of the Regional Refugee Response Plan financed as the year comes to a close.
