Sudanese Refugee Women Share Their Stories and Experiences of the War in Sudan

Aweil: UNMISS

Sudanese refugees share their stories and the hardships they faced when fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

Halima Musa Ismail explained that due to fleeing the intense fighting in Sudan, she lost many personal belongings such as phones, money, and even the gold she was wearing. She was beaten and suffered greatly. She shares the same experiences with thousands of women and children who crossed the border to seek refuge in South Sudan.

Halima, who has settled in Northern Bahr-El-Ghazal state, spoke at an event for the 16 Days of Activism campaign to end violence against women and girls. The campaign was organized by the UNHCR, the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, “World Vision,” “Alight” organization, and other partners. She spoke about the terror and trauma she experienced during the war in Sudan, inspiring other women to share their stories.

Arad-El-Sham Yusif, a mother of six children, said: “Some of us witnessed rapes happening right in front of us.”

Hawa Musa Saleha, from South Darfur, described how she lost 47 relatives in an aerial bombing. She called for an end to the violence and urged for greater protection and respect for women, wherever they may be.

“This is a day when we send a message to all men to stop fighting and treat women with the respect they deserve.”, She added

At the event, the Head of the UNMISS Office in Aweil, Ataklti Hailu, condemned violence against women and girls as a serious crime against society and humanity.

“We must all come together to denounce this violence. Any society that does not treat its women and girls with respect cannot claim to be a healthy society. There is no cultural or religious justification for violence against women and children. Women have suffered enough. It must stop.” He said.
