Rumbek UNMISS
A group of 20 volunteers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) decided to take decisive action, inspired by the spirit of volunteering and perhaps with the memory of December 5th, International Volunteer Day, in their minds.
The multinational team of UN volunteers, representing 16 different countries, spent over a month addressing many neglected needs in the medical wing of Rumbek Hospital.
“If we can contribute to change, we will take responsibility to make a meaningful difference.” Adam Rashid, A member of the “rescue team,” said

The team gathered the necessary resources for their planned repairs, and over the weeks, they began dedicating their free time to organizing and cleaning the important healthcare facility in Lakes State. They installed proper windows and brought joy to the walls by applying fresh, shiny paint.
The hospital regained its functionality after being repaired and was ready to welcome new mattresses, cushions, and bed covers. Mosquitoes and other annoying insects were eliminated by placing protective nets.
The renovation efforts were complemented by a thorough cleaning, and happiness was evident on the faces of the patients. Mary Shoul said: “This ward looks completely different from how it was a few weeks ago when I was first admitted. Now I can sleep on a good mattress, and I can even adjust the bed when I want to eat. It makes a huge difference.”

The improvements in the ward also contributed to boosting the morale of the medical staff and hospital workers. Dr. Tiran Madit said: “We are all winners and beneficiaries. A clean and well-maintained environment allows us to focus on our real work, which is providing quality care.”
While improving the lives of patients and nurses was the immediate goal of their volunteer initiative, it also served a different, long-term purpose.
Fatimah Mami Henrietta Din-Kanu, also part of the renovation team, said: “We wanted to inspire others by showing what can be achieved when we work together with determination.”
