Report: Al-Naeim BuMarak Kuol

The United Nations Mission, through the Mine Action Service (UNMAS), has begun clearing settlement sites designated for individuals who have opted to leave the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) protection of civilians site in Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile State.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNMAS, and UNMISS attended a field visit on November 27 in Malakal to oversee the necessary preparations for mine clearance on the city’s outskirts.

According to a United Nations bulletin, the area being cleared of landmines and other explosive remnants of war has been identified as a settlement location for those choosing to leave the UNMISS protection site. Once cleared, the area will be safe for internally displaced persons and local communities to farm, live, and move freely and without fear.
