The embassy has initiated a strategic partnership with the Grassroots Empowerment and Development Organization (GREDO) to construct a basketball court at Gambol Basic School in the Sherikat area of Juba County.

In a press release sent to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the embassy stated that the new facility will provide a recreational space, offering youth the opportunity for physical, social, and emotional development through sports.

The German Ambassador to South Sudan, Christian Sedat, said: “Basketball holds a very special place in the hearts of the South Sudanese people. Many children look up to their heroes, the Bright Stars team, and are inspired by their tremendous achievements.

Through this court, we will give these children a space to play basketball, develop their skills, and nurture their aspirations.

“”We are proud to support this initiative, which reflects our ongoing commitment to empowering South Sudanese youth and unlocking their great potential.”The ambassador added

In addition to being a sports facility, the court aims to strengthen community ties and encourage positive interactions among families and local leaders.

The German Embassy and GREDO believe that the project will help build trust and resilience in a community still recovering from the effects of conflict.

Jaffar Mbugua Njenga, the Executive Director of GREDO, stated: “We are excited to see the positive impact this court will have on the youth of Sherikat.

It will provide a safe space for physical and emotional expression, supporting young people in discovering and nurturing their talents in a structured and supportive environment.”

South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has a youth population that makes up about 70% of its total, with the majority of its citizens under the age of 30. Despite their numbers, the youth of South Sudan face significant challenges due to the country’s history of conflict, political instability, and economic difficulties.
