The leadership of Juba City Council, headed by Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani Swaka, held its first strategic meeting with the Executive Council to discuss the challenges facing the institution and to develop a new vision aimed at strengthening institutional performance and achieving sustainable urban development.
At the opening of the meeting, Mayor Wani Swaka expressed his gratitude to the members of the Executive Council, reaffirming his commitment to participatory leadership and teamwork. He noted that his administration’s top priorities include improving city cleanliness and rehabilitating Juba’s deteriorating road network, stressing that teamwork is essential to achieving these goals.
The Mayor also underscored the importance of strengthening strategic partnerships with the Central Equatoria State Government and development agencies, emphasizing that such collaborations form the cornerstone of improving Juba’s image and promoting sustainable urban growth.
Deputy Mayor for Administration and Finance, Jenifer Yabu Lasuba, highlighted the major institutional challenges facing the Council and called for collective effort and shared responsibility among departments to overcome them.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor for Social Services, Lual Joseph Deng, expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the new leadership team, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and continuous coordination among Council members to ensure effective service delivery to citizens.
For his part, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Waste Management, Stephen Lomude, voiced concern over the city’s poor sanitation conditions, saying: “Juba is dirty and waste is scattered everywhere; we must act urgently to restore the city’s proper image.”
In conclusion, the Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Alex Mati, urged all departments to maintain commitment and discipline in implementing the recently launched 100-day action plan, emphasizing that the next phase requires seriousness and transparency in performance.
This meeting marks a significant step toward enhancing local governance in Juba City, with a focus on improving public service efficiency and strengthening citizens’ trust in the City Council, as part of a broader vision to build a clean, organized, and sustainable city.
