JUBA, October 16, 2025 — The United People’s Alliance (UPA) has warmly welcomed General Nhial Deng Nhial’s decision to establish the South Sudan Salvation Movement (SSSM), describing it as a courageous and patriotic step toward restoring peace and stability in South Sudan.
In a statement released on Thursday, the UPA praised Gen. Nhial for “seeking alternative avenues to bring lasting peace to South Sudan,” recognizing his long record of leadership during the liberation struggle and his vital role in negotiating the Comprehensive Peace Agreement as part of the SPLM delegation.
“Gen. Nhial’s commitment to the people of South Sudan cannot be questioned,” the UPA said. “We wholeheartedly welcome him and the SSSM into our ranks as we continue the struggle for peace, justice, and prosperity for all.”
The alliance lauded Nhial and his colleagues in the SSSM for their “unwavering commitment to putting the people of South Sudan first,” adding that their courage and leadership “embody the spirit of selflessness and unity that our nation urgently needs.”
The UPA statement also condemned what it termed the “Juba regime’s continued stranglehold on power,” accusing President Salva Kiir and his close circle of enriching themselves while ordinary citizens suffer. It warned that the nation’s political and social crisis is worsening rapidly, urging all South Sudanese to unite in confronting the current leadership.
“This situation can no longer be tolerated by the masses,” the statement declared. “We call on all South Sudanese, both at home and abroad, to come together and resist the destruction of our nation.”
The UPA emphasized that only national unity can prevent further disintegration and reclaim the future of South Sudan. “It is our collective duty to build a nation that reflects the values we fought for — peace, justice, and prosperity for all South Sudanese,” the statement read.
Concluding the message, the UPA leadership reaffirmed its solidarity with Gen. Nhial Deng Nhial and the SSSM.
“The leadership of the UPA proudly welcomes Gen. Nhial Deng Nhial and the SSSM and reaffirms our shared commitment to rescuing our nation,” the statement said.
‘God Bless South Sudan.’
The statement was signed by Gen. Pagan Amum Okiech, Chairman of the United People’s Alliance (UPA) and Commander-in-Chief of the UPA–UF.
