The Federation of Women Lawyers in South Sudan (FIDA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare and with support from the United Nations, organized a two-day workshop in the capital Juba. The event focused on strengthening the role of women legal professionals in the ongoing political transition in the country.
The workshop brought together a wide range of participants, including representatives from government institutions, local and international civil society organizations, members of the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, as well as activists, lawyers, and advocates for women’s rights. Various organizations working in the fields of women’s empowerment and development were also present.
In her opening remarks, the Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Hon. Aya Benjamin Libo Warille, emphasized the importance of empowering women legal professionals to become active partners in shaping political decision-making. She noted that the current transitional period offers a historic opportunity to ensure fair representation of women within constitutional and legislative structures.
The workshop addressed several key topics, including the challenges facing women in the legal field in South Sudan, strategies to support their participation in governance institutions, legislative processes, and political negotiations. The sessions concluded with a set of recommendations aimed at legally and socially empowering women.
Numerous local and international organizations took part in the event, including Women for Justice and Equality, Vision for Humanity, Resilience Organization, Bridge Youth and Women Empowerment, Christian Agency for Peace and Development, EVE Organization, and others. Also in attendance were representatives from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), UN Women, UNFPA, Save the Children, and Light for the World.
This workshop is part of ongoing efforts to promote women’s inclusion in building a democratic and inclusive political system and to uphold the principle of “Leave No One Behind”, in line with South Sudan’s commitments to human rights and gender equality.
