Mayiendit, Unity State – News Agencies
Recent flooding in Mayiendit County, Unity State, has displaced approximately 35,987 people from their homes since last Thursday, causing widespread devastation across local communities.
Floodwaters have swept through four main payams in the county—Thaker, Mirim, Bor, and Tutnyang—destroying homes and farmlands, according to residents who spoke to Radio Tamazuj over the weekend. They described the situation as “critical.”
Nyawhat Jagai, a mother of nine from Kuok area in Thaker Payam, said the heavy rains forced entire families to flee, with many now sheltering in schools and churches.
“We were among the first affected because our homes are near the river. People are now staying in schools and churches. Our crops are underwater, and we are facing severe food shortages. We have been suffering from floods since 2020, and we urgently need assistance,” she said.
Nyakong Nyang, another resident, described the conditions as “disastrous,” citing lack of food, inadequate shelter, and limited mobility due to rising water levels.
“It is still raining, which means the situation is only going to get worse,” she warned.
County Commissioner Juong Majok Gatluak confirmed the scale of the crisis, stating that most displaced families are now staying in schools, churches, or with relatives.
“The county headquarters in Mayiendit Town is completely submerged, and farms across all the affected payams are underwater. People are not only facing displacement and homelessness, but also the threat of hunger and deteriorating health conditions. We are calling on humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately,” he said.
The commissioner added that while meetings have been held with several relief agencies, many reported funding shortfalls following the suspension of USAID operations in the country.
