By Emmanuel Garjiek Juba Mayor Johnson Sawka announced on Saturday that the city has 36 new garbage collection trucks working to enhance waste management. He encouraged residents to uphold hygiene in their neighborhoods.Sawka explained that each truck makes three trips daily, meaning all 36 trucks collectively complete 108 trips per day. The project is designed to handle approximately 540 metric tons of waste daily, addressing the growing challenge of waste disposal in the capital.

“Currently, we have 36 trucks collecting garbage, and these 36 trucks transport waste in Juba City at a rate of three trips per a truck, which is equivalent to 108 trips daily in collecting waste in Juba City, which means that what we collect of waste in juba city is estimated at 540 metric tons of waste,” he affirmed He emphasized the importance of community participation, urging citizens to pay garbage collection fees and maintain cleanliness. In November, the Japanese government donated 17 garbage collection trucks and two containers to support waste management efforts.

This initiative aims to alleviate the long-standing issue of residential waste accumulation. However, the city council reported that around 2,000 South Sudanese pounds in household waste collection fees were lost last year.

Additionally, in 2022, the Juba City Council launched a waste management master plan for 2023, collaborating with international partners and the local community to achieve sustainable waste management in the city.
