African Union and IGAD Reaffirm Support for Peace Efforts in South Sudan During Official Visit to Juba

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and the Deputy Secretary-General of IGAD reaffirmed their full support for the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement in South Sudan during an official two-day visit to Juba from May 5 to 6, 2025.

The visit came at a critical juncture as the country navigates its transitional period. The delegation held high-level consultations with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and senior government officials, focusing on strengthening national dialogue, accelerating the implementation of the transitional roadmap, and reinforcing governance institutions.

In a joint communiqué issued by the African Union and IGAD, both organizations emphasized that peace, stability, and inclusive governance are essential foundations for sustainable development in South Sudan. Chairperson Youssouf also urged South Sudanese leaders to work together to complete the transition and prepare the nation for democratic elections.

The delegation also met with regional and international partners, including the African diplomatic corps and representatives of the Troika, to enhance coordination and collective support for the country’s political transition.

Both organizations reiterated their ongoing commitment to supporting South Sudan in building a future rooted in unity, stability, and prosperity.
